In recent years, with the popularity and widespread application of the internet, the combination of internet technology and finance has created a series of innovative financial development models. The emergence of internet finance has met people’s demand for convenient and efficient financial services; and with the use of big data, cloud computing, blockchain, artificial intelligence and other financial technologies, internet finance has also helped the development of the banking industry, resulting in a new type of differentiated service model. While internet banking, as an emerging banking model, is still in the early development stage, traditional banks have also been affected by fintech and internet banking. Traditional banks have also innovated and upgraded on the basis of the original banking model, for example, by the establishment of direct banking. This has caused some obstacles and impacts to the internet banking in its infancy. How should internet banking or neobanks respond to the impact brought about by the transformation of traditional banks and still maintain its own unique development path? To address this issue, it requires a research on the development strategies of neobanks.
This paper takes WeBank as an example to analyze and put forward the development strategies of neobanks. These strategies have some supplementary significance to the research of neobanks, and also provide some reference for the development of other neobanks. This paper mainly compares and analyzes the business model and operation model of neobanks and traditional banks after transformation, and summarizes the differences between the two; and uses SWOT, PEST, questionnaire research methods to study and analyze WeBank. Lastly, the paper explains how WeBank should face the impact of traditional banks and related development strategies, for example, by strengthening risk management and control, enhancing publicity, and sticking to win-win cooperation, etc.
