Over the past few years, there has been a growing global emphasis on environmental protection and constructing ecological civilizations. As a specific manifestation of this focus, environmental regulation plays a crucial role in influencing enterprise production and operations, while also having significant implications for sustainable economic development and social progress. As China's economy continues to advance and urbanization accelerates, environmental issues have arisen and stricter environmental regulations have become unavoidable.
The objective of this study is to examine the effect of environmental regulation in China on business performance, and provide a comprehensive analysis from diverse perspectives. Firstly, this paper provides a review of the historical development of environmental regulation in China and an analysis of its current situation in relation to its context. Secondly, the impact of environmental regulation on the business performance of various types of enterprises as well as those located in different regions is compared. The findings indicate that environmental regulation has a notable influence on both productivity and financial performance.
Based on a panel data analysis of publicly traded companies from 2013 to 2017, this research paper presents an empirical study that reveals the intricate and dynamic effect of environmental regulations on firm business performance. Specifically, the study finds that the implementation and reinforcement of environmental regulations negatively impact the business performance of enterprises. The tightened regulations may lead to increased costs of environmental protection, reduced production efficiency, lower product quality, and other related challenges, which can have an unfavorable impact on overall business operations in the short term. Moreover, stringent environmental regulations can compel highly polluting enterprises to allocate a larger share of their resources towards meeting environmental protection standards compared to other industries. This can lead to a significant drain on the economic and human resources of such enterprises, potentially impeding their overall development.
In conclusion, this paper provides a summary of the research findings and offers some policy recommendations. The promotion of environmental protection technology, the reinforcement of environmental supervision and law enforcement, and the establishment of an all-encompassing and continuous environmental protection mechanism are proposed as measures that can assist enterprises in improving their business performance, quickening the pace of transformation and upgrading, and achieving sustainable development. This study will contribute to an enhanced understanding of the impact of environmental regulation and offer robust support for government agencies and business leaders seeking to foster a positive synergy between environmental regulation and business operations.
