Depression is a common psychological disorder that affects an individual's work, school, and social functioning, and can even be life-threatening. This study aimed to reveal the influence and mechanism of mothers in the transmission of intergenerational depression, and to examine whether there is a difference between children's academic performance and mothers' education level. The indirect effects of maternal depression transmission and intervention ideas were further explored. This study was based on a secondary database, the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) 2018 questionnaire database. Five hundred and ninety-five adolescents and their mothers were selected for the cross-sectional study. Based on the cognitive-behavioral model, we investigated whether external locus of control and externalized behavior played a mediating role in the transmission of maternal intergenerational depression.
SPSS software was used to explore the potential relationship between maternal depression and child depression through nonparametric tests, regression analysis, multilevel regression analysis, and chain mediation analysis. As predicted, the chain mediation effect was significant, suggesting that adolescents with higher levels of maternal depression are at increased risk of developing depression, and that external locus of control and externalizing behaviors can be mediating variables in the intergenerational transmission of depression. Paying attention to the mental health problems of low-achieving adolescents and counseling mothers with low educational attainment on appropriate educational methods can help reduce the negative effects of maternal depression.
