Network Embedding, Entrepreneurial Learning, and Entrepreneurial Performance in a Cross-Cultural Environment : An Empirical Study on Hengqin Macau Entrepreneurial Youth
Many young people from Macau have become cross-border entrepreneurs in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. Many scholars are concerned about how cross-border entrepreneurs can overcome difficulties in adapting to local conditions and achieve good entrepreneurial performance in their entrepreneurial locations. Many scholars have previously recognized the impact of network embedding on entrepreneurial performance and explored the role of entrepreneurial learning. However, most of these studies have focused on the organizational level, lacking research on the individual level, and have not fully considered the impact of external environmental uncertainty and internal cultural intelligence.
Based on international business theory, social network theory, entrepreneurial learning theory, and cross-cultural theory, this article conducts relevant research on the individual level of cross-border entrepreneurs, exploring the internal impact mechanisms of network embedding, entrepreneurial learning, and entrepreneurial performance. At the same time, it fully considers the impact of uncertainty perception of cross-border entrepreneurs in cross-cultural environments and the role of cultural intelligence played by entrepreneurs. This article employs a combination of literature review, large sample quantitative research, and multi case qualitative research to obtain research findings with strong explanatory power.
This article first proposes relevant research models based on literature review, and then proposes 11 related hypotheses through literature review. A questionnaire survey was used to collect 122 samples of entrepreneurial youth in Macau for quantitative research. Research has found that the degree of network embedding (structural embedding degree, relational embedding degree) has a positive promoting effect on the entrepreneurial performance of cross-border entrepreneurial youth. The learning effect of entrepreneurship plays a completely mediating role between the degree of relationship embedding and entrepreneurial performance. Environmental uncertainty perception actively regulates the relationship between network embeddedness (structural embeddedness, relational embeddedness) and entrepreneurial performance, while also having a direct impact on entrepreneurial performance. Cultural intelligence has a direct impact on entrepreneurial performance, and the learning effect of entrepreneurship partially mediates between the two variables mentioned above. Subsequently, using a multi case qualitative research method, a detailed exploration was conducted on the process and mechanism of the impact of network embedding on entrepreneurial performance through entrepreneurial learning among six Macau entrepreneurial youth in a cross-cultural environment.
Based on the above research findings, from a management practice perspective, cross-border entrepreneurs should pay attention to local network embedding in the process of achieving entrepreneurial performance. In a cross-cultural environment, cross-border entrepreneurs should actively play their cultural intelligence role to improve entrepreneurial performance. At the same time, cross-border entrepreneurs should learn to strengthen environmental insight, keenly perceive the opportunities brought by the uncertainty of the cross-cultural environment, and take timely action. Cross border entrepreneurs should have an awareness of active learning in local social interactions, adopting two behaviors: experiential learning and alternative learning, in order to improve entrepreneurial performance.
