Child maltreatment is a global public health crisis that has generated significant attention from relevant departments in China, especially the issue of abuse against girls. The dissertation proposed three research questions:1. What are the forming mechanism of maltreatment against girls? 2. How does childhood maltreatment influence the subjective well-being of Chinese homosexual women(lesbians)? 3. Do the interventional strategies align with the psychological needs of abused girls? Three research in this thesis were developed to investigate the questions presented above.
Study One would adopt the innovative methodological paradigm of computational grounded theory, investigating the causes of maltreatment against girls by using web crawling technology to collect content from social media platforms or personal posts about childhood abuse by female users. During the theoretical sampling phase, since there were target categories, unstructured questionnaires would be used for anonymous surveys to ensure the efficiency of the research. Study Two focused on Chinese lesbians, employing constructivist grounded theory to conduct one-to-one in-depth interviews. Study Three adopted machine learning-based topic clustering models, literature mining tools, and thematic analysis to assess the alignment between abuse prevention interventions and specific psychological needs of childhood abuse survivors.
Study One identified three categories: moral culture, structural injustice, and assess the costs of abusive behaviors. The traditional moral cultural system maintains structural injustice against women that permeates every domain and level of Chinese social life. Against this backdrop, abusers assessed the moral and legal costs of harming girls as relatively low, making the issue of abuse against girls particularly severe. Study Two identified three categories: searching for reasonable explanation, moral coercion, and difficult interpersonal relationships. It was found that childhood abuse interacts with Chinese unique sexual and gender cultural structure through the processes of searching for meaning, moral coercion, and influencing interpersonal relationships, producing negative impacts on daily life experiences and emotional health. Childhood maltreatment impacted the daily life experiences and happiness through comprehensive processes. Based on the psychological needs of participants, the analysis and suggestions of counselors, three urgent intervention issues for abused children were identified: attachment, socialization, and behavioral patterns. The mainstream directions of intervention research in Chinese and English journals are macro-level child protection system reform and specific mental health issues and psychotherapy intervention strategies, respectively. They aligned with the specific needs of abused children.
This dissertation employed machine learning to assist qualitative research, which has theoretical significance in expanding the creative thinking in reference to knowledge and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration on child maltreatment. The research findings were beneficial in raising public awareness of abuse prevention and had practical significance in developing culturally sensitive prevention and intervention strategies.
